What is German Chocolate?
People often think that German Chocolate comes from the country Germany, but you’d be surprised to know the truth! The term “German Chocolate” is in reference to the creator of German Chocolate, Samuel German. German created a sweet dark baking chocolate for the Baker’s Chocolate Company in 1852. Since then, it’s been used to make cakes, brownies, and more!

How to Make German Chocolate Brownies?
- Preheat your oven to 325 degrees.
- Spray an 8×8 baking dish and line it with parchment paper. Trust me, the parchment paper will make getting the brownies out of the pan so much easier.
- In a bowl, combine your dry ingredients: flour, cocoa powder, sugar, salt, and chocolate chips.
- In another bowl, combine eggs, oil, water and vanilla.
- Pour wet mix into the dry mix and stir until combined.
- Spread the batter into your baking dish.
- Top with dollops of homemade German Chocolate frosting.
- Run the top of a knife just barely through the top layer of the brownie mix using an S pattern in a horizontal direction and then an S patter in a vertical direction. This will slightly incorporate the German Chocolate frosting into the brownie mix as it bakes.
- Bake at 325 degrees for 50-60 minutes or until a toothpick comes out with just a few crumbs on it. It’s ok to be slightly underdone and is actually what you want to see.
- Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely before cutting into squares.
How to Make German Chocolate Frosting
- In a medium saucepan melt butter over medium heat.
- Add granulated sugar, brown sugar, egg yolk and evaporated milk.
- Stir constantly until thickened (3-5 minutes).
- Turn off the heat and add shredded coconut, pecans and vanilla. Stir until combined and allow to cool.
Tips To Make German Chocolate Brownies
- Make the German Chocolate frosting before making the brownie mix.
- Use parchment paper to line your baking dish. The fudginess of the brownies and the melted chocolate chips will make it difficult to get them out of the baking dish.
- Sift flour and cocoa powder to remove lumps.
- Remove brownies from the oven when the mix is no longer wet and you see a few crumbs on the toothpick. Do not bake until you no longer see crumbs because your brownies will be overbaked.
